One died during rescue 19. desember 2006 12:35 One Danish marine, from the Coast Guard ship Triton, drowned this morning close to Sandgerði when a speed boat with eight marines turned over. The Coast Guard helicopters found the men in the ocean and heaved them on board the helicopters. They were taken to the Keflavík Hospital. Another marine was in serious condition and was taken to the National Hospital in Reykjavík, the other six are getting better. The body of the one that drowned was found at 10 o'clock this morning. The Coast Guard was on its way to a stranded freight ship with twelve men abroad, three sea miles away from Sandgerði. The ship stranded at five o'clock this morning. The captain asked for assistance. Rescue boats from Landsbjörg Rescue Team were also sent to the stranded ship and rescuers walked the beach. The crew is still on board the stranded ship but are not considered in danger. The freight ship is called Wilson Muugo, weighs 2,600 tonnes and is registered in Cyprus. The ship was on its way from Grundartangi to Murmansk in Russia. Rescue procedures are still in process.
